Botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin type A, widely known as Botox or botulinum is a protein naturally sourced from the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium grown in specific laboratory conditions.
This neurotoxin is mainly used in anti-wrinkle therapy. Its mechanism of action involves the relaxation of specific muscles, which initiates the inhibition of action potential in the neuromuscular junction by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter – acetylcholine from the axon of a motor nerve into the myofiber.
Although the duration of action of the drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration differs on a case-by-case basis, it is recommended to repeat the procedure after about 12 weeks.
